The Department of Theatre and Dance presents Arthur Miller's A View From the Bridge, directed by student Steven Hoffman Jr., and starring assistant professor Joel F. Grothe as Eddie Carbone. Italian-American immigrant life in the 1950's textures this searing drama of love and revenge. Longshoreman Eddie Carbone is devoted to his wife, Beatrice, and to his niece, Catherine. When Beatrice's impoverished Sicilian cousins enter the U.S. illegally in the hope of finding work, Eddie gives them a helping hand. But when Catherine and one of the cousins fall in love, Eddie's affection for his niece turns into obsession.

On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night's dream.

Uncle Vanya

Directed and adapted in a new version by Joel F. Grothe

Originally produced in 1899, this classic play tells the story of the Voynitsky family living on a countryside estate and dealing with major political and social upheavals in Russia around the turn of the 20th century. Grothe's adaptation moves the action to Louisiana and examines the incredible cultural dichotomy of the region in the 1890s.

Filled with humor, hope and loss, Uncle Vanya has been translated and adapted thousands of times since its premiere and is widely considered one of the greatest plays of modern theatre.

In Neil Simon’s popular musical, Charity Hope Valentine, a dance-hall hostess with a heart of gold and a past littered with bad relationships, finally finds love with Oscar, a naïve young man who knows nothing about how she earns a living. Originally directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, Sweet Charity premiered on Broadway in 1966 and contains popular musical numbers such as Hey, Big Spender and If My Friends Could See Me Now. The production won the Tony Award for Best Choreography.
